apartment with an angled core

A quiet residential street in Dejvice, Prague. A small apartment building, oriented north to south, and on its second floor, a two-bedroom apartment awaiting renovation for a young couple.

The apartment has one distinctive feature around which the entire design revolves: a service core at the centre of the plan. To create a more open and generous interior, we treat the core as an object inserted into the space. This impression is reinforced by softening its junction with the ceiling using a band of glass blocks, by its distinctive colour, and by rotating it slightly. The rotation also helps shape the surrounding spaces, creating a better connection between the kitchen and living room while enlarging the entrance area.

A wall of built-in wardrobes running across the apartment conceals the more private world of the bedrooms. The master bedroom is compact, but all the more intimate for it, with the possibility of closing off the walk-in wardrobe integrated into the cabinet wall. In the children’s room, the solid wardrobe partly transforms into a climbing structure. Integrated steps provide access not only to the bunk bed, but also to hidden spaces in the upper part of the cabinetry.
