A Pleasant End of Summer. Peaches, Wine…
I’m heading to a friend’s cabin in South Moravia. The journey takes me along the newly built motorway to Vienna (haha). Just outside Brno, I turn off towards a small village. I drive through a village square lined with typical Moravian terraced houses. I turn towards the church and then uphill along a dirt road. I pass orchards, vineyards and a small holiday cottage settlement. At the end of the steep road, I park the car. I get out and walk towards a metal gate. I open it; the gate creaks, and I set off along a stone pathway towards the cabin.
The path runs along one of the many terraces of the sloping site. The setting sun shines directly into my eyes, revealing the silhouettes of the trees and the outline of the cabin, with its mono-pitched roof rising in the same direction as the slope. As I approach the cabin, the sun disappears behind the roofline. I can now see its shape more clearly, as well as the texture of the charred timber cladding. Suddenly, I see Petr waving at me through the cabin. I open the glazed entrance door. I don’t take off my shoes, as the stone pathway that began outside continues through the cabin all the way to the terrace, where Petr is standing. I walk through the bright interior towards him.
As soon as I arrive, he offers me some juicy peaches, freshly ripened in the orchard beside the cabin. We chat for a while, and then head upstairs to climb on his bouldering wall in the attic. Later that evening, a few more friends from Brno arrive, and we spend the night talking over glasses of homemade wine until morning.
