In the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, in the village of Líšnice, by the Divoká Orlice River. On a green meadow, beneath an ancient lime tree, an old farmhouse and barn have stood for centuries.
Part timber, part stone, long abandoned by their former owners. The old wood is turning into dust, enough to make a structural engineer nervous.
It is always sad when something has to be torn down, but the story does not end here. It is time to build anew! The most important parts of the house will remain, with new additions growing around them.
The old stone vaulted rooms will survive, placed where everyone can see them. This solid piece of history will become the heart of the house, the place where life happens.
New spaces will revolve around it, ready for future stories of weekends in the countryside. A large dining room, kitchen, service spaces and two entrance halls.
The timber elements must be replaced, but we will try to preserve the original atmosphere. Some insulation will inevitably be needed, but we know how to hide it within the construction.
The most significant architectural intervention, balancing history with a contemporary approach, will be a new inhabited attic. From the outside, it will sit on the house almost like a captain’s hat.
Where cows and rabbits were once kept, we now escape to the countryside, to a place of retreat. Houses adapt and change along with the way we use them, yet we still feel the urge to preserve the fading atmosphere of times gone by…
