Mum, Don’t Go to Oresi!

This project was designed for my mum, who had been longing for a new kitchen to replace my dad’s twenty-year-old setup made of cheap laminate. As is often the case, designing something for your own family is not exactly easy. The challenge is even greater when your mum is as creative as mine, with ideas that are often chaotic and at odds with my own, inevitably leading to quite a few arguments. Our disagreements eventually culminated in my beloved mum storming off to a kitchen showroom, where she returned with an unattractive mishmash of kitchen cabinets and a catalogue of Polish products.

What followed was a discussion:

Me: “You can’t seriously want this. Do you really like it?”

Mum: “Yes. I can’t agree with you.”

Me: “But the kitchen looks terrible.”

A brief exchange of opinions followed…

Me: “So what exactly do you want in there?!”

Mum: “Lots of storage space, and above all, drawers. I don’t want to rummage around in cupboards looking for pots. Oh, and most importantly, keep it cheap.”

Well… after many more twists, turns and compromises, this simple kitchen finally came into being. We saved wherever we could and spent money where it would be visible.
