family house extension

The original assignment was to design an outdoor sauna for a turn-of-the-millennium catalog house, but the task gradually expanded to include a new bedroom and a terrace opening onto the garden. The search for a functional layout solution resulted in a proposal for an addition that intentionally transforms the architectural character of the existing house.

The design themes are varied—American porches, Nordic wooden structures, reuse, and the intertwining of the existing with the new. The primary goal, however, remains the effort to transform an ordinary catalog home into a place with its own identity. Thus, despite the relatively small scale of the extension, the distinctive design solution gives the house a strong and unique character.

Functionally, the design adds a new 17.5 m² bedroom and a 9 m² sauna, which was built on the site of the original woodshed. Both spaces are connected by a covered wooden deck made of larch that opens onto the living area of the house and extends it toward the garden. The roof structure consists of a spruce truss supported by distinctive tripled wooden columns. The cladding of the addition—and, in part, the existing house—is made of larch, which, along with all other visible wooden elements on the exterior, is unified by a green paint finish. As part of the renovation, the windows were also replaced; their exterior surfaces are likewise painted green. The roofing consists of 44 × 44 cm folded diamond-shaped metal panels, with a larger translucent panel made of clear polycarbonate in the center.
