The apartment building, part of the Tulipán residential complex in Modřany, was created in the late 1990s through the conversion of a reinforced-concrete frame originally intended for a cultural building. This original purpose is reflected in the layouts of the apartments, which contain a number of unusual features. The 83 m² duplex apartment with one bedroom and a living room with kitchenette is no exception.
The apartment has a generous double-height space with a gallery, while the remaining rooms feel considerably more compact. We wanted to give them some of the same generosity. The design therefore seeks to soften this contrast, connect the different parts of the apartment and make the layout feel more open, without altering the existing structure of the gallery or staircase.
The first step was to relocate the kitchen to the position of the original bathroom. This gave it more space and a better connection to the rest of the apartment. The new arrangement also opens up a view through the entire apartment from the entrance. The new bathroom is connected to the double-height space by a large window with sliding panels positioned alongside the bathtub. We leave the gallery open and remove unnecessary partitions. In direct contact with the living room, we introduce a large worktable that allows its users to stay connected with what is happening throughout the apartment. The remaining parts of the gallery are used for circulation, relaxation or occasional overnight stays for guests.
The exposed concrete frame and the ceiling finished with a fire-resistant spray coating form the raw backdrop of the apartment. We complement these with softer materials such as Marmoleum and plywood. Red-painted steel elements on the upper floor and green tiles give the interior its distinctive character.
