There is an old farmhouse in the Šumava Mountains. This large stone cottage, surrounded by spruce forests, contains both residential and farm spaces, which are connected by a large attic. The existing spaces are charming, but in many ways unsuitable for family life.
The layout adjustments primarily concern the residential part of the house. In the space of the high hallway, we propose a central element that extends through all floors. Thanks to its central location, this stove-fireplace-chimney-staircase serves as a kitchen helper, a heat source in the living room, and a connector between the floors. The upper floor is primarily intended for sleeping and consists of four bedrooms and a gallery, which is connected to a partially hidden staircase leading to the attic hall. From the outside, this residential section is finished with white lime plaster, unifying the original structure with the new additions.
The back of the house has a more public character. Above the vaulted communal kitchen on the ground floor is a multipurpose attic space, which is connected to a pair of guest apartments. Below them is a garage and an extension with utility rooms and a greenhouse, partially concealed behind a stone wall. This section combines old stone masonry and dark wood.
The area surrounding the building is complemented by landscaping featuring irregular stone surfaces, gravel paths, and stone walls. The northern section serves as a parking area, the eastern section includes a swimming area, and the southern relaxation zone near the forest connects to the ruins of a former outdoor kitchen.
During preparations for the next phases of the project, it became apparent that the building’s foundations are in a critical condition. Unfortunately, this design is therefore being set aside for now.
