sauna Trutnov

Warming your body to a temperature higher than normal is pleasant and relaxing!

The sauna was designed for my father as a reaction to the closure of all public spas due to the coronavirus. I created a small almost shed looking like structure in the garden. The only thing that reveals its true purpose is subtle chimney and round window.

It is a wooden building through and through. Both the structure and the envelope are made with wood. Apart from wood and fasteners only corrugated sheet metal as roofing and old tiers as foundations were used. The sauna is heated with a wood burning stove with an output of 16 kW.

The façade is clad in charred spruce planks. For inner cladding, soft
resin-free Nordic spruce is used. The construction is founded on old gravel-filled tires that serve as solid and water-permeable footings. The corrugated iron is used as the roofing – overhanging the entrance – as well as to protect the wall adjacent to the shower.

The sauna has dimensions of 2×3 meters and a headroom of 2 meters. The maximum capacity is 4 to 6 people. In the interior are 3-meter long wooden benches, placed at two heights with a dimmable LED strip located under the lower bench. Outside, the sauna is lit by a light bulb embedded in the wooden cladding.
