plywood in the form of a table
Plywood as a birthday present, as the material for realizing the idea.
The board was laying in a barn nearly forgotten, covered with a blanket and dust for almost a year while the concept for the table was being conceived.
The original idea involved working with a construction of small wooden joists and the board, which, as commonly expected, was only to form a worktop. As I was supposed to make the table by myself and with limited resources, I started considering making it with only one material – the plywood I already had. That meant creating a construction that would need neither screws, nails, nor glue. Several iterations down the line, an abstract painting painted by František Kupka came to my mind, inspiring the form and arrangement of the table legs. In the abstract painting I saw a plan and possibilities for the realization.
The table took shape from the abstract composition in both plan and space. The final design is an assembly consisting of five pieces of plywood that can be put together easily to form the table.
