Relaxed Ruggedness
The 2015 project envisioned the conversion of a former barn stable into technical facilities with a sauna and the demolition of the garage, to be replaced by a terrace. However, the project revision remained merely in the planning stages for a long time.
The current project works with the intimacy of the sauna experience and the raw character of the farm building. It allows this character to resonate through whitewashed masonry, basalt paving, exposed utility lines, galvanized window and door frames, and recycled elements such as barn doors and old bricks. The result is an environment rooted in simplicity, rawness, and the direct exposure of the structure and technology, rather than the creation of a “wellness” atmosphere.
A new terrace connecting the house to the barn was built on the site of the former garage. The simple oak structure made of unplaned wood echoes the character of the original farm buildings in its aesthetics. The terrace is a natural extension of the kitchen interior and serves as the main living space of the house during the summer months. A significant functional and visual element of the garden is a concrete rainwater tank that also serves as a cooling tub.
The entire project plays on the tension between ruggedness and the everyday comfort of use. It does not seek to suppress the original character, but rather to preserve it and allow for its further, gentle development within the current use.
