By a clay track, amongst the fields, with views of the railway line, the train station, the nearby woods, the village houses peeking out above the treetops, and the church tower. To the south, below the village of Dobré Pole, a new wine cellar lane is gradually taking shape, and with it a new wine cellar.
Wine cellars are cool yet cosy. To the outside observer, they are naturally enigmatic, arousing curiosity and a childlike desire to explore their mysterious depths and let oneself be engulfed by their sombre atmosphere, which sharpens the senses, momentarily making one forget the glare of the ‘world out there’. We, too, allowed ourselves to be engulfed.
In our case, however, equal importance was attached to spaces for family recreation, and so the wine cellar has become an integral part of this. The tasting room manages to combine both these functions, and has naturally become the focal point – elevated and partially sunken, encircled by three staircases: two leading to the bedrooms and one leading to the cellar. All paths thus lead to the table, whilst other activities take place, as it were, ‘just round the corner’.
The axial symmetry of the gable façades was also a defining factor in the interior layout. This symmetry contributes significantly to the building’s undeniably sacred character. Nevertheless, our primary inspiration – for the composition, form and materials – came from the original wine cellars located in the immediate vicinity.
The garden is unfenced and divided into two sections. The northern section opens out onto the new cellar lane. The southern section, which is more intimate and framed on its long sides by shrubs and a row of trees, features a terrace with a pergola supported by columns that mirror the structure of the house. Identical columns situated nearby define the space around the terrace more precisely. The adjoining row of trees, on the other hand, softens the contours of the space until the garden blends into the surrounding landscape.
