winter garden

The addition to a single-family house in Trutnov stands on the site of the former old pergola, on a gentle slope overlooking the surrounding meadows. It is connected to the main house via balcony doors on the east facade. This expands the kitchen and living room with additional space that is used year-round in various ways. The structure is entirely wooden, constructed from spruce KVH beams. The foundations are concrete, cast using permanent formwork. With floor plan dimensions of 5.5 × 7 m, a clear height of up to 3 meters, and a fiberglass roof covering, the space is bright and multifunctional.
The dominant feature of the interior is a wide wooden bench for sitting or reclining, which runs along the entire perimeter of the sunroom. Along the northern facade, the bench transitions into a large planter where herbs and other kitchen-essential crops can be grown year-round. Thanks to its size, the sunroom serves a variety of purposes. In the summer, the family gathers here for celebrations, and photos and movies are shown; in the winter, a hot tub is set up here, or the cats make it their home.
On the slope below the windows is a perennial flower bed created by Kája. It serves as a sort of boundary between the field and the garden, forming the foreground of a scene framed by spruce trees and a walnut tree. The sunroom has thus become not only an extension of the house but also a space that naturally connects the interior with the landscape.
